(Leavittsburg, Ohio) On July 13, 2015, Trumbull Correctional Institution (TCI) donated 150 lbs. of harvested vegetables to local community agencies located in Warren, Ohio, in effort to battle hunger.

As a Community Service Project, offender groups came together to start a Community Garden. The garden is located on the main compound in a location where staff and offenders can admire the progress daily. Rain barrels were set up for watering the crops and offenders work ten (10) hours a day to cultivate beautiful vegetables. The entire project was funded by offenders. Startup plants were donated by Links and WordMasters. Links’ mission is to initiate and develop programs that can help offenders grow towards being productive members of society. WordMasters’ purpose is to enhance communication skills of Christians in a public forum by utilizing biblical principles and ethics.

A passionate offender presented the idea of this Community Garden to Warden Christopher LaRose to provide fresh food to the local community. The offender was a farmer prior to his incarceration and felt this was his way of contributing to society. “The main goal is to provide healthy vegetables to those in need, while providing offenders with meaningful activities to make a difference in the community,” stated Warden Christopher LaRose.

Warren Family Mission, Tod’s Crossing and Free Indeed were the recipients for the first vegetables. Donations are expected to continue on a weekly basis.

It is DRC’s (Department of Rehabilitation and Correction) mission is to reduce recidivism in Ohio. DRC is sincere about preparing the offenders to successfully return as your neighbor. The national average of offenders returning to prison is 49.7%. DRC is proud to say Ohio is below that rate at 27.5%. Trumbull Correctional Institution, located in Trumbull County, houses 1,500 level 1 and level 3 offenders. Built in 1992, the prison employs more than 350 correction officers and staff.
