Accused murder suspect had help in Avoyelles prison escape, authorities say

KALB – Louisiana – Accused murder suspect Melissa Hayes, who escaped from the Avoyelles Parish Detention Center on July 11, was captured without incident on July 15 by members of the U.S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Fugitive Task Force in Marrero.

During the investigation, deputies assigned to the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office Corrections Security Team worked closely with the local U.S. Marshals Violent Offender Task Force as well as investigators from the Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Office, the Alexandria Police Department and the local office of the Louisiana Department of Corrections-Probation & Parole in attempting to locate Hayes.

Due to the violent crime Hayes is accused of, law enforcement worked tirelessly to recapture her after the escape. Evidence obtained during the investigation implicated three subjects who assisted or had information to the whereabouts of Hayes.
