| Assaults, fights common in youth prison system |

Early last decade, the Heartless Felons, a gang known for its violence on the streets of Cleveland, got its start within the walls of the state’s youth prisons. Members sought to exert control over other inmates. Sometimes that led to assaults, against other inmates and against staff at juvenile correctional facilities. That continues today at sites such as the Indian River Juvenile Correctional Facility in southwest Massillon. Several inmates there have been charged and sentenced for felonious assault, rioting and other offenses. Some of them are Heartless Felons members, according to the Stark County Prosecutor’s office.
