| Schuylkill forced to send inmates to other counties |

Schuylkill County officials said Friday that they soon will be sending inmates to other counties — despite the additional costs involved — in order to relieve overcrowding at the prison. “The last option that counties have is to contract,” Commissioner George F. Halcovage Jr., who also chairs the county prison board, said. “We feel that we’re at that point.” Sheriff Joseph G. Groody agreed. “We’re going to have to right now. We have no choice,” he said. County Controller Christy D. Joy said state officials have determined that the Schuylkill County Prison has exceeded its capacity, with 293 inmates housed in a facility that should hold no more than 277.
