25-year-old Charles D. Miles, an inmate in the custody of the Maine Department of Corrections, was indicted last week on two counts of mailing threats against a president. The letters were allegedly mailed in early 2000. An affidavit signed by a Secret Service agent includes information about another letter that Miles is alleged to have sent to the White House last year that contained threats against President George W. Bush and Governor John Baldacci. All the letters are full of misspellings, grammatical errors, run-on sentences and profanities. Miles was committed to the Augusta Mental Health Institute after he was found not criminally responsible for setting a March 1999 fire at the Skowhegan State Fairgrounds. He was later sentenced to spend one year at the Maine State Prison after he escaped from AM-HI on Christmas Day in 2003. |
