MASON CITY, Iowa – Earlier this week, another Iowa inmate escaped from a work release facility. The Iowa Department of Corrections says 25-year-old Michael William Euchner II is serving a 10-year sentence for third-degree sex abuse. On June 14th, he was sentenced as a lifetime sex offender with special supervision. However, on Tuesday, Euchner did not return to the Sioux City Residential Treatment Facility where he is staying. This is just the latest incident in a string of similar inmate escapes in Iowa. The number of inmates escaping Iowa facilities is rising. According to the Department of Corrections, after declining from 2005 to 2009, numbers have increased. There were 305 work-release escapes in Iowa last year, the most since the organization began keeping track in 2001. “Work release is an opportunity for you to get out of here and keep your job,” says Laura Best.
