Inmates caused about $28,000 in damage during a standoff and fight in an Arizona prison dining hall that left three correctional officers injured, including the warden's wife, authorities said last Monday. Among the items that will have to be replaced or repaired at the Cimarron Unit of the Arizona State Prison Complex-Tucson are: metal tables and stools, light fixtures, ceiling tiles, flooring, windows, and a coffee urn. Forty-three inmates barricaded themselves inside the unit dining hall after the Jan. 17 fight, which led to a four-hour standoff as the prisoners refused to follow orders. Officers used canisters of tear gas to end the standoff. The inmates were transferred later that day to a maximum security unit at another prison and now face criminal charges and disciplinary action. No inmates were injured. Two correctional officers were treated for injuries and released. A third, the wife of prison Warden Greg Fizer, was hospitalized. |
