| Prisons still working to modernize sentence calculations |

It's taking a little longer than expected. Department of Correctional Services Director Scott Frakes said Friday a new system to automatically calculate sentences of prison inmates, replacing a decades-old computer calculation system, will not be complete until early 2016. "It is important that this project is done right the first time, and I am confident my team's work will restore public trust in the department's application of sentences," Frakes said. As the calculation project has proceeded, he said, it has become clear there was more to it than originally known, and more rules had to be built into the software. Questions led to more questions and more interpretations, said Beth Boal, the state's lead applications analyst.
