Jail deaths prompt calls for DOJ investigation

SPOKANE, Wash. -

Is the Spokane County Jail safe? The Spokane County Human Rights Commission wants the Department of Justice to answer that question after four people died at the jail in the last three months.

Of those deaths, one was ruled a suicide and two are under investigation. The fourth person died at the jail but was in police custody at the time.

The Spokane Human Rights Commission says the number of deaths isn't as big of a factor as the sequence of deaths, one seemingly right after another. The commission says public concern prompted them to ask for this investigation.
