35 corrections jobs cut at Charleston facility

35 positions are being cut at the Mountain View Youth Development Center in Charleston.

Earlier this week, Maine's Department of Corrections confirmed layoffs would be coming to facility. Thursday afternoon, the agency's commissioner said 34 full-time and 1 part-time position would be eliminated.

This will happen as the facility transitions from holding kids to adults. Over the past five years the average yearly population of juveniles in Charleston went from 81 to 25. Last week, it dropped below 10.

Lawmakers and corrections Commissioner Dr. Joseph Fitzgerald say the cost of keeping Mountain View open with numbers shrinking couldn't be justified.
