| 12-hour days for prison staff unsafe |

It has now been three months since the deadly May 10 riot at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution that resulted in the deaths of two inmates and injuries to four inmates and two guards. The prison immediately went on lockdown and has remained in that status ever since, with 12-hour work shifts for officers and caseworkers. With a shortage of workers, the long shifts were initially required five days a week, but that was reduced to four days a week in late May. Still, 12-hour work shifts are a lot to expect of employees in a high-stress environment.
