| Community corrections to see loss in 2016 revenue |

Overall, Tippecanoe County is in pretty good shape financially, Auditor Bob Plantenga said Tuesday at a finance meeting. Revenue for the county should go up overall for the 2016 fiscal year, and property taxes should stay the same or possibly decrease overall, he said. One area, however, will see about $500,000 less in revenue: Tippecanoe County Community Corrections. The loss is due to the Indiana Department of Correction no longer accepting Class D felons, who now will be dumped into local jails with no reimbursement from the state. Previously, the county was reimbursed $35 per day for each inmate held locally for the Indiana Department of Correction. In 2010, the county billed the state about $1.7 million, which went into the county’s general fund, Commissioner Tracy Brown said. That number decreased steadily as the Indiana Department of Correction took in more inmates. As of July 1, however, a new law prohibits judges from sentencing people to prison if their sentence is less than 90 days, according to the Associated Press.
