“Who was supervising? Nobody. He was a trusted inmate working by himself.” “Everyday,” intoned Derrick Schofield as he gave context to the story of an inmate escaping two weeks ago from a work detail mowing grass in West Tennessee, “we put out almost 1,500 inmates (to work in our communities) and bring them back in.” Schofield, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Correction, was trying to instill a sense of confidence in the ability of his department during a House of Representatives State Government Committee hearing on Monday. The commissioner was responding to a softball question from Rep. Bill Sanderson, R-Kenton, about why the committee had been summoned to Nashville for a grilling of Correction officials. Read More. |
