An inmate and an Arizona Department of Corrections employee were critically injured when a bus transporting 50 minimum-security inmates from a work program collided with a rolled-over commercial vehicle on Interstate 8 between Casa Grande and Gila Bend early Tuesday, officials said. About 20 inmates and a Corrections officer were sent to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries and later released, according to department spokesman Bill Lamoreaux. The status of the bus driver and the inmate who were hospitalized in critical condition remained unchanged Tuesday evening, he said. Inmates who weren’t hurt in the crash tended to the injured. And, according to witness accounts, some inmates helped direct traffic around the wreckage near milepost 139, said Bart Graves, and Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman. All 50 inmates had been accounted for. The bus was on a return trip to Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis from a work program in Casa Grande when it collided with a jackknifed semitruck blocking westbound lanes of I-8 at about 1:20 a.m. DPS said the semi had been carrying herbicides, but the material was not considered to be hazardous.
