CRANSTON, R.I. - A former Cranston police chief spoke exclusively to the NBC 10 I-Team about the scathing Rhode Island State Police report on the Cranston Police Department and Mayor Allan Fung. Retired Col. Steve McGrath is breaking his silence because he said he can't watch Fung blame him and others for problems he said the mayor helped create. McGrath said he chose to retire, rather than compromise his values. He said learning about the culture of mistrust and backstabbing inside the department after he left was difficult. “(Fung) wants to claim he didn't know about this or he wasn't aware of this,” McGrath said on Wednesday, the morning after Fung faced tough questions about the report from the City Council. “Either he's incompetent, he's complicit, or both, and none of that is acceptable.
