| Inmate deaths highlight mental health policy concerns |

MONTPELIER – Three deaths of Vermont prisoners this year highlight ongoing obstacles the state faces when dealing with mentally ill inmates as well as the challenge of getting information about inmates housed in out-of-state prisons, legislators said. Testimony about the three deaths, how they occurred, and whether the state could have done anything differently was heard Wednesday by the Joint Legislative Justice Oversight Committee at the Vermont State House. Two inmates died while incarcerated in Vermont, a third was in a Kentucky jail. Vermont Defender General Matthew Valerio presented summaries of his office's investigations into the three deaths and Department of Corrections procedures in handling of their cases. In most situations, Valerio said, the Department did what it could with the resources it has to address the inmates' issues. In one case, Valerio said the state failed to address the inmate's mental health issues properly. Read More. |
