| With state prisons at capacity, Lynchburg-area jails keep inmates longer - and costs add up |

Asking to be sent to a Virginia state prison seems like an unusual request. For some convicted felons of the Blue Ridge Regional Jail who are set to serve time in state prison but have yet to make the trip because of a lack of bed space, the plea makes sense. Virginia Department of Corrections facilities have more programs and larger recreational areas and can administer contact visits, which the local jail system and its more restricted budget does not have, according to Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority Director Tim Trent. “There is more freedom at state prisons,” Trent said. “We try to offer as many programs as we can but our inmates generally don’t go outside.” Read More. |
