A deadly prison riot erupted at a California penitentiary just days after a brawl at a different state facility claimed an inmate’s life, according to authorities. A 23-year-old prisoner at the California Correctional Center (CCC) in Susanville was fatally shot by a correctional officer trying to quell the 45-person disturbance in a medium-security dining hall, the prison said in a statement. Jonathan Velarde was attacking another inmate with a weapon Sunday when he was shot once and later died at the prison medical center, authorities said.
