SEATTLE - A juvenile inmate fighting wildfires is recovering in a Seattle hospital after escaping, and then shooting himself. Dave Helvey with Chelan County Sheriff's Office said the 16-year-old inmate from Naselle Youth Camp assaulted a guard on Friday, and fled from the Chelan Falls Park fire camp shortly after 11 p.m. The search ended Saturday when a witness spotted the teen near the intersection of SR 150 and US 97, near Chelan Falls around 8 a.m.. When deputies approached the teen, he took off running, and the deputies pursued. When the teen stopped running, he turned to the deputies and pulled a small handgun from a bag, Helvey said. The teen immediately placed the gun to his head, and briefly spoke to the pursuing deputies before he pulled the trigger. Read More. |
