| Judge rules on kosher meals in state prisons |

On Wednesday, Aug. 12, Federal Judge Patricia Seitz — from the U.S. Southern District of Florida Court in Miami — issued a final judgment and permanent injunction granting a U.S. Department of Justice request to monitor the kosher-meal program in Florida prisons with regular watchdog audits. Seitz's order also mandates the Florida Department of Corrections (DOC) file monthly reports — regarding personnel, prisoners, food preparation and dining areas — with both the court and Justice Department to ensure Florida is complying with the law, and to file quarterly reports regarding prisoners suspended or removed from the program. It remains unclear whether the state — which has spent at least $400,000 fighting lawsuits over kosher meals during this long, drawn-out battle — would appeal. Read More. |
