A correctional officer at Centinela State Prison in California has been arrested on charges that he conspired to smuggle narcotics and cell phones to inmates. Daniel Jones Jr. was arrested on Jan. 15 following a six-month investigation into the operation, Imperial County District Attorney's Office investigator Michael Capeci said. Jones and his girlfriend, Leslie Saldana, are suspected of being involved in a conspiracy to smuggle marijuana, cocaine and phones into the prison, which houses men convicted of felonies. The two were released on bail pending a Feb. 18 court arraignment. Investigators are trying to determine whether a former girlfriend of Jones and his two roommates may have been involved. The investigation began when authorities discovered inmates were sending large payments, often thousands of dollars, from their trust accounts to Saldana and Jones' ex-girlfriend, Capeci said. A search of Jones' Imperial home by federal and local authorities turned up marijuana, cocaine, drug paraphernalia and an illegal automatic assault weapon, Capeci said. A search of Jones' vehicle on the prison grounds reportedly resulted in the discovery of a 9mm pistol and drug paraphernalia. |
