Pilot program treats civilly committed substance abusers at Plymouth County jail

PLYMOUTH – A pilot program will help substance abusers get treatment in a place they would otherwise try to avoid: the county jail. Starting this week, a dormitory unit at the Plymouth County Correctional Facility will be dedicated to housing men who have been ordered into treatment by a judge.

The so-called Section 35 patients will spend up to 90 days in the dedicated cellblock, where they will receive treatment and counseling six days a week.

The first of the patients arrived at the jail off Long Pond Road on Monday from the Massachusetts Alcohol and Substance Abuse Center at the state correctional facility in Bridgewater.

Ten patients made the initial trip. Sheriff Joseph McDonald expects the treatment unit to have 30 to 40 patients within a few weeks. The capacity is 60 patients.
