| Subcommittee hears testimony on issues regarding state prison system |

The Senate Corrections Subcommittee of the State and Local Government Committee met in Nashville recently to examine issues in Tennessee’s prisons. The agenda included the recruitment and retention of Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) employees, the implementation of the 28-day work cycle and the classification, and reporting of incidents in prisons across the state. These three matters have been in the news this summer as the department faces significant staff shortages in various prisons across the state. The Subcommittee heard testimony from TDOC workers, former employees, a representative of the Tennessee State Employees Association (TSEA), as well as Commissioner Derrick Schofield and members of his staff. The 28-day work cycle was implemented last August to reduce overtime costs. Many correctional officers, however, used overtime pay in the past as a means to supplement their income in order to survive financially since TDOC salaries for these workers are lower than other law enforcement professionals.
