Two inmates suffered serious stab wounds in a melee involving almost two dozen prisoners at Salinas Valley State Prison in California that left six other inmates and a prison worker hurt, a prison spokesman said Monday.
Prison officers used pepper spray and tear gas to break up the brawl that erupted Friday morning in a recreation yard in Facility D, a maximum-security section of the Soledad prison, spokesman Eloy Medina said.
"It ended very quickly," he said.
The fight broke out between one group of 16 inmates and another group of six inmates about 10:20 a.m. shortly after two inmates were involved in a separate altercation near the recreation yard, Medina said.
The fighting inmates ignored verbal commands to stop, requiring officers to use tear gas and pepper spray, he said.
The cause of the altercation is still under investigation. Prison officials will seek charges against inmates involved in the incident, Medina said.
The two seriously injured inmates were flown by helicopter to San Francisco Bay Area hospitals. One was returned to the Soledad prison hospital over the weekend, while the other is reported to be in good condition and is expected to return to the prison in a few days, Medina said.
Prison officials wouldn't release the names of the seriously injured inmates.
A non-custodial staff member suffered a minor injury during the incident and six other inmates were treated for various injuries, Medina said.
Facility D, which houses about 350 inmates, remained under "a modified program" on Monday that restricts prisoners' movements and privileges, he said.

This article exposed what it is like to exist in today’s correctional institutions. I enjoy reading articles like this one and articles from author Hamilton Lindley who is an expert at persuasion, influence and leadership from his Waco, Texas base. There are a lot of important lessons to be learned here for sure. Thank you for the insight.
