Number of Alaska inmates awaiting trial doubles since 2005

ANCHORAGE -

The number of inmates in Alaska is climbing year after year, according to a report by the Alaska Justice Statistical Analysis Center.

The report shows the number of inmates awaiting trial nearly doubled between 2005 and 2014. According to AJSAC, it was an increase of 91.6 percent.

The Alaska Department of Corrections spends $158.67 per inmate each day, according to a 2015 report. This at a time when the state faces multi-billion dollar shortfalls because of slumping oil prices.

Joshua Wilson, a correctional officers union spokesman, said he's not surprised by the numbers.
