Hundreds of correction officers pay their respects to Assistant Deputy Warden Belinda Nicks

Hundreds of correction officers stood saluting in the rain Thursday as the casket of their fallen colleague was brought outside after a funeral attended by Mayor de Blasio.

Assistant Deputy Warden Belinda Nicks, 53, died on duty in an office in the Brooklyn House of Detention on Sept. 1. The cause of death is being investigated, but friends and family believe it was tied to her diabetes.

Those closest to her remembered Brooklyn native as a caring colleague who had planned to retire at the end of the year after 27 years on the job.

"Belinda was a ray of warmth and kindness," de Blasio told mourners gathered inside the Pleasant Grove Tabernacle. "She truly devoted her life to uplifting others - for nearly three decades, selflessly serving as one of New York's Boldest."
