An inmate at the Lucas County (Ohio) jail died after being jolted by a stun gun, the second time the man had been jolted in a few hours, authorities said. Jail officers used a Taser gun to subdue Jeffrey Turner, 41, after he banged repeatedly on a security window of a first floor cell Monday night, said Rick Keller, a jail administrator. Toledo police earlier used a Taser to subdue the man when he was arrested on charges of loitering, resisting arrest and obstructing official business, Keller said. Toledo police referred questions to the county. Turner was jolted more than two hours after he was brought to the jail. Keller said that after Turner was stunned the second time, he was responsive and placed in handcuffs and leg restraints. A few minutes later, a jail nurse was called. Turner was taken to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The Lucas County coroner's office said Tuesday that an initial autopsy on Turner was inconclusive as to the cause of death. More tests will be done. The jail has used Tasers, which deliver 50,000 volts of electrical charge and temporarily immobilize suspects, about a dozen times since March, and no one before has required hospital treatment, Keller said. Taser stun guns have been touted as less lethal than other ways of subduing combative people, but Tasers have come under increasing scrutiny as a number of deaths have been blamed, at least partially, on the devices. |
