POUND, Va. - A prison program is helping inmates re-integrate into society from day one. The Virginia Department of Corrections operates the Step-Down Program, focused here in southwest Virginia prisons. Ninety percent of Virginia's prison population will return home after serving time, and they told us it is important the prisons are a part in helping ex-offenders prepare. "We're taking the initial risk here at the institution in a pro-active way to try to change the criminal thinking within these offenders prior to their release, re-entry begins day one that an offender is placed within the Virginia Department of Corrections," Tori Raiford, Unit manager for Red Onion State Prison, said. Red Onion State Prison is a Level 6 prison, the highest-rated security facility in Virginia. Department of Corrections officials are trying to make sure going home is an easier adjustment.
