Combative inmate burned in jail scuffle

A murder defendant who twice fought with deputies over the weekend got more than he bargained for in the second incident, when the combination of an electric charge and pepper spray ignited flames around his head.
Gary Patrick Hansen suffered only a minor burn and on Monday was charged with assaulting a jail deputy. He has been in jail since December.
The threat posed by Hansen was underscored when he was escorted into Jackson County (Ore.) Circuit Court Monday by eight officers, including Sheriff Mike Winters. A deputy pinned Hansen's hands behind his back as an additional felony charge of assaulting a police officer and a misdemeanor count of fourth-degree assault were filed against the prisoner. Hansen's feet were bound with irons connected with a chain to his waist.
Hansen, 44, has been separated from other prisoners in the Jackson County Jail since he was lodged Dec. 12 in connection with the slaying of his neighbor, 79-year-old Richard E. Clearwater. Clearwater's body was pulled from the Rogue River near his home outside Gold Hill on the same day Hansen was arrested. Clearwater apparently died of trauma to his head with a blunt object and a possible slash on his neck, said Deputy District Attorney Tim Barnack.
Winters said the violent nature of Hansen's alleged crime is one reason deputies have kept such a tight rein on him. Despite that, on Saturday Hansen allegedly punched corrections deputy Lee Eastwood in the eye upon returning to his cell from a scheduled visitation.

This article exposed what it is like to exist in today’s correctional institutions. I enjoy reading articles like this one and articles from author Hamilton Lindley who is an expert at persuasion, influence and leadership from his Waco, Texas base. There are a lot of important lessons to be learned here for sure. Thank you for the insight.
