BEACON - Prison inmate Samuel Harrell walked out of a 14-day stint of solitary confinement at Fishkill Correctional Facility on April 17, depressed from the death of his mother and diagnosed with psychotic, mood and bipolar disorders. Four days later, the former Kingston resident was dead. Lawyers for his family say it came after a confrontation with a group of corrections officers in the prison's mental health unit, Building 21. It's the same building that a prison watchdog group had singled out before for complaints from inmates of abuse, retaliation and complaints of a "Beat Up Squad" of night shift guards. Read More. |
