| Prison agency says inmate wages figure was not hourly |

COLUMBIA – The state’s prison agency now says inmates participating in a traditional work program are not paid an hourly wage but a sum every two weeks. Stephanie Givens, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections, told The Greenville Newsearlier this month that inmates in the program earned between $6.75 and $18.75 per hour. The information was used in a story about prison work programs and allegations by some black leaders that inmates are exploited in arrangements with private companies. Givens said Monday the inmates in traditional work programs actually make between $6.75 and $18.75 every two weeks. She said inmates in the program must be disciplinary free and have had the job since 1998 to receive those wages. Read More. |
