Department of Corrections to conduct training exercises

SAFFORD — The Arizona Department of Corrections will conduct training exercises in and around the community using trailing hounds Sept. 28-Oct. 2. Trailing hounds and horses have been in use by the Department of Corrections for more than 20 years with great success.

Trailing hounds are trained to detect human scent and provide a direction of travel for teams to follow. The animals are a vital resource to law enforcement, used to trail and apprehend escapees and fugitives. They have also proved to be an invaluable resource to the community to locate lost and missing persons.
