| Lawmaker urges audit of Corrections |

Spending an afternoon talking with employees from Columbia Correctional Institution left Wisconsin State Sen. Jon Erpenbach and Rep. Dave Considine astonished at day-to-day conditions in the prison, many the result of a prolonged staffing shortage. The representatives met with the CCI staff members on Sept. 8 and on Sept. 11, Erpenbach drafted a letter to the state Legislative Joint Audit Committee. “Representing more than one corrections facility, I have heard time and time again of disintegrating workplace safety because of systemic understaffing, lack of training, and moving-target policies on overtime and other safety issues,” Erpenbach wrote. “As legislators it is time we got a handle on the practices and policies in our correctional facilities and an audit is a clear way to move forward.” Read More. |
