Richard Glossip supporters rejoice after 2-week stay is granted

MCALESTER — There was a feeling of excitement Wednesday outside the foreboding metal and stone gate of the Oklahoma State Penitentiary as supporters of death row inmate Richard Glossip celebrated the stay of his execution.

Just before noon the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals handed down the decision, less than four hours before Glossip's scheduled lethal injection. It would be the second time he came within hours of execution before receiving a stay.

“It's an unbelievable day," said Sister Helen Prejean, noted death penalty abolitionist, author, and Glossip's spiritual adviser “If I think about it, I'm just going to melt into tears, because Richard's going to live.”

Prejean told reporters gathered outside the gates that state officials never took the time to adequately question the case against Glossip.
