| Dept. of Corrections to charge inmates for local phone calls |

ANCHORAGE - The Alaska Department of Corrections has said it will now charge inmates to make local phone calls. The Department has previously only charged inmates for out-of-state calls, at a rate of $3.15 for 15 minutes. Now, inmates will also be charged $1 for 15 minute calls made locally. Both family members and inmates can pay the phone bill through the SECURS TECH website, officials say. If the inmate can't afford to pay for calls, the DOC says their contract allows each inmate to receive 5 to 6 calls per month free of charge. This is something that many inmates' families are not looking forward too. Danielle Norman, whose boyfriend is in custody at the Palmer Correctional Facility, says they speak on the phone frequently.
