| Two death row inmates caught after escape attempt |

Two convicted killers tried unsuccessfully to escape Ohio's death row Thursday by climbing out of a caged outdoor recreation area, officials said. Inmates Richard Cooey of Summit County and Maxwell White of Ashland County were the first death row inmates to attempt to escape since the state moved death row to Mansfield in 1995. Cooey and White were in the recreation area about 3:45 p.m. when they climbed a pile of snow and lifted the top off the cage, said Andrea Dean, spokeswoman for the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. White was caught trying to climb the first of two perimeter fences, while Cooey was between the two fences when officers reached him, said Scott Basquin, warden's assistant at the Mansfield Correctional Institution. Each inmate received minor cuts and scrapes but weren't seriously injured during the escape attempt, Basquin said. The two perimeter fences are topped with razor wire. Alarms went off as soon as the inmates climbed the fences, Dean said. "Our system worked," she said. Death row inmates have an hour-long exercise period each day in the caged recreation area. The two men were back on death row Thursday afternoon and were being interviewed, she said. The State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, and the two men could face charges for the escape attempt. Cooey, 37, was sentenced to die for raping and killing two University of Akron students in 1986. White, 39, was sentenced to die for killing a state highway trooper during a traffic stop in January 1996. |
