| Senator calls inmate wages shameful, urges increase |

COLUMBIA – A Greenville senator is calling for better wages for state inmates in work programs, describing the pay as “shamefully lower” than decent. Sen. Karl Allen, a Greenville Democrat and member of the Senate Corrections Committee, said he’s requested a full report from the director of the Department of Corrections after the office misreported wages. The state’s prison agency said earlier this week that inmates participating in a traditional work program are not paid an hourly wage as it reported earlier this month but instead are paid a sum every two weeks. Stephanie Givens, a spokeswoman for the prison system, this week said the inmates in traditional work programs actually make between $6.75 and $18.75 every two weeks. She said inmates in the program must be disciplinary free and have had the job since 1998 to receive those wages. Read More. |
