| Head of North Dakota's Department of Corrections sounds off to lawmakers about prison population |

BISMARCK (KCND) - The North Dakota State Penitentiary is packed and running out of room. Representatives of the state Department of Corrections told a interim legislative committee studying the prison propulation that nearly every day there's a new prison population record set. There are nearly 1800 inmates in the state’s prisons right now, and projections indicate that could rise to nearly 3000 by 2025. Corrections Director Leeann Bertsch says that's the result of a rise in felony crimes and mandatory sentences. She says more punishment doesn't work.
