| UMC and members of NOPD at odds over prisoner policy |

NEW ORLEANS -- Members of the NOPD are at odds with one of the policies at the new University Medical Center, and they say that policy puts police and other people in danger. At issue is this policy: police have to give up what they say are two life-saving tools when entering the controlled access unit, or inpatient unit for prisoners. The first is their service weapon. The second is their cell phone. PANO and the Fraternal Order of Police have gotten a number of complaints from officers who are asking the UMC administrators to work out a new policy when it comes to guarding prisoners and suspects who are admitted to the hospital for treatment.
