| Corrections faces 2nd whistleblower suit over GED |

SANTA FE – A second former state Department of Corrections inmate education administrator has filed a whistleblower lawsuit alleging she was fired for raising concerns about a GED program for state prisoners. Patricia Brainard says in a suit filed last week in state District Court that she moved to Santa Fe “at considerable personal expense” to take a job as Corrections’ education administrator/bureau chief in July 2013 and was fired less than three months later, after her boss yelled at her for questioning the procurement and implementation of the General Educational Development program offered by the Pearson VUE testing company. Brainard’s suit says that David Huerta, director of recidivism reduction at the time, told her, ” ‘God put you on this path’ (to implement the GED program without complaint).” Efforts by the Journal to find a phone number for Huerta were unsuccessful. In April, Catherine Johnson, longtime manager of the Adult Basic Education program at Corrections, filed a similar suit, saying she was fired after she complained that the Pearson VUE program was a waste of money and its purchase may have violated the state procurement code.
