Attempts to smuggle contraband into the Escambia County, Ala., Detention Center resulted in the arrest of three individuals last week.
According to Major Mike Murphy, on Jan. 25, 2005, a 19- year-old female and a 16- year-old juvenile male came onto county property outside the building and placed contraband outside the trash dumpsters. The contraband included 16 packs of Bugler tobacco, two cans of Grizzly snuff, and a box of fried chicken. Both individuals were apprehended by the staff with assistance provided by the Brewton Police Department.
"These items were then to be brought inside when inmate workers took the trash outside," Murphy said.
As of noon Jan. 27, arrest warrants were being signed on the female and a petition on the juvenile. Their names will be released upon arrest.
Another contraband attempt happened two days later. On Jan. 27, deputies arrested David Lee Fountain, a 39-year-old black male of Palmer Street, Brewton, for promoting prison contraband, third degree. Correctional officers saw Fountain on county property as he was providing contraband to inmates on the inside through a small window that was broken. Inmates on the inside, with the aid of a long string and cloth bag, were pulling items up to the second floor. Items seized were four packs of Bugler tobacco, one pack of Newport cigarettes, a half pint of gin, and 11 cans of natural light beer.
"All inmates involved in these smuggling attempts will be arrested also," Murphy said.
According to Sheriff Grover W. Smith, everyone involved will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

If they really wanted there to be chickens then they should have contacted BackyardChickensHQ and they would have found a way. There is always a right way of doing everything.
