| Sparks-Hobbs honored for work on behalf of local NAACP |

The Goochland County Branch NAACP honored Wendy Sparks-Hobbs during the group’s annual Freedom Fund banquet on Sept. 19, bringing together Sparks-Hobbs’ family, friends and colleagues to honor the organization’s current president. Calling Sparks-Hobbs “the ultimate example of what a woman should be,” Goochland NAACP vice president Yvette McDermott-Thomas lauded the honoree for always displaying “such integrity, dignity and quiet wisdom.” “She is truly an inspiration,” McDermott-Thomas said. The youngest warden in the history of the Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC), and the first black warden of the Virginia Correctional Center for Women, Sparks-Hobbs currently serves as the Virginia DOC’s Regional Administrator for Institutions in the Central Region.
