| Reducing prison overcrowding |

Lifelong Democrat Cal Hobson is praising Gov. Mary Fallin, a Republican, for convincing the Oklahoma Board of Corrections last week to allow inmates to earn more good-time credits and get out of prison more quickly. This effort to ease the length of some prison sentences occurs at a time when Oklahoma prisons are at 112 percent of capacity. Oklahoma leads the nation in the number of women it incarcerates per capita. The state is third or fourth in the high number of men locked up. Hobson, a longtime Lexington resident, said, “It is my opinion that Mary Fallin has shown courage” by urging the state to find ways to trim back the state’s prison population. Although Hobson pointed out that he rarely agrees with Fallin’s actions as governor, in this instance she has made a commendable decision. Alex Weintz, who is Fallin’s communications director, said, “Governor Fallin applauds the DOC Board for pursuing good policy and for their commitment to implementing the law” allowing for more good-time credits.
