| Arizona inmate dies 5 days after assault |

An Arizona Department of Corrections inmate being temporarily housed in a Pinal County jail died Friday from injuries suffered during an assault by another inmate earlier this week, officials said. The Pinal County Sheriff's Office and Office of the Medical Examiner are investigating the death of 37-year-old Anthony Lopez, who was found unconscious on the cement floor of a recreation area at 6:45 p.m. Sunday, according to a sheriff's statement. Lopez never regained consciousness. He had been serving a five-year sentence for aggravated assault and forgery. Both suspect and victim were being temporarily housed in Pinal County after a series of inmate riots in July destroyed infrastructure at a private prison in Kingman. Read More. |
