| Broome plans 13 new deputies for expanded jail |

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office would add 13 deputies under the county’s proposed 2016 budget, gains that would be required by both the $6 million jail expansion and the proposed outsourcing of Broome’s food preparation and service staff. The 13 additional deputies would be on the job by November. The county’s proposed budget estimates the cost would be almost $321,000 for those months of 2016, an average of just under $25,000 per deputy. That number would likely rise for the first full year of employment. In 2013, the average pay for a full-time, year-round corrections deputy was over $69,000, according to Broome County salary data.
