LANSING — In the lobby of the Michigan Corrections Organization's West Kalamazoo Street offices, visitors can peruse a rotating display of the dangers corrections officers face every day. It's a collection of shivs — furtively formed from metal, plastic and paper — that have been confiscated from prisoners, a stark reminder that the 6,000 corrections officers working in Michigan's prisons lay their lives on the line every day. And some lives have been given. Now, the MCO — the union representing state prison corrections officers and forensic security aides who police the criminally insane at the state's Center for Forensic Psychiatry — is working to erect a monument to officers who have died working to protect their communities, their fellow officers and prisoners. "We feel like there should be more public awareness of what our officers go through and the sacrifices not just they make but their families make, too," Andy Potter, chief of staff at the MCO, said last week. Today, "there's nowhere for families to go to grieve or to recognize or give any kind of respect, collectively, to the corrections officers who have given that ultimate sacrifice." Read More. |
