Louisiana State Penitentiary's oldest inmate has died at a Baton Rouge hospital.
Warden Burl Cain says 95-year-old Walter Culberth had served more than 26 years of a life sentence for first-degree murder. Officials say Culberth became ill last month and was treated at the prison hospital until his condition worsened last Monday. That's when he was transferred to Earl K. Long Medical Center, where he died about 10 p.m. that night.
When he was arrested for the 1978 stabbing death of his estranged girlfriend in Orleans Parish, Culberth was on parole for manslaughter.
