Second inmate suicide at Washington County Jail raises questions

The Washington County Jail faces scrutiny both internally and externally after the second prisoner found hanging from bed sheets this year died on Saturday.

Gregory James Michaux, 38, of Clarksville was pronounced dead Saturday morning at Washington Hospital, where he was taken after a corrections officer found him hanging in his cell. On Feb. 2, guards found the body of inmate Richard Kempf, 31, who had also hanged himself using sheets.

Michaux was jailed March 23 and was awaiting a hearing on aggravated assault and other charges on Tuesday, Warden John Temas said. According to Washington County commissioner Larry Maggi, who is board chairman of the county prison, Michaux was not under suicide watch and was not eligible for it. A relative said on Saturday that she had no reason to believe he was prone to suicide.
