| Prisoners say earned sentence reductions not honored by DOC |

(KUTV) In June, 334 men and woman graduated from behind bars. Each took and passed the high school curriculum. This years' graduating class had an extra incentive: reduced prison sentences. Trying to fight both overcrowding and recidivism, the Utah legislature has made it state law: if an inmate gets their high school degree while behind bars then four months of the inmate's sentence is automatically commuted. Among those who graduated is Dennis Hobot, who has been incarcerated for the last year and a half guilty of theft. With the guaranteed four month credit, Dennis should have been released this month but he's not out. His husband, Howard Johnson, is outraged. "He's done everything they ask," Johnson said.
