| Prison to roll out new inmate incentives, too late for some |

Salt Lake City — (KUTV) Prison officials say they are ready to implement a new law aimed at rehabilitating prisoners in a way that will keep prisoners from coming back. "The residents of Utah deserve better," said Executive Director of the Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice Ron Gordon. "The result will be decreased recidivism, increased public safety and we will not need to spend over $500 million to build new prison beds." That roll out includes what the law calls "earned time credit." By meeting certain goals from behind bars, prisoners can earn guaranteed time off their sentences. The prison says they are ready to get the program underway by an Oct. 1 deadline. But as Get Gephardt first reported Monday, the law says that the "earned time credit" section should have been "established" way back on May 12. Had the prison implemented the "earned time credit" section in May, Howard Johnson says his husband would be a free man. In prison for theft, Dennis Hobot earned his high school degree from behind bars. It's an accomplishment that would have earned Hobot a four month reduction in sentence if the law were being followed, Johnson says. Read More. |
